Youth Capacity Building through Vocational Education

Partner: Terre des Hommes
Country: Bangladesh
Start date: 01/10/2013
Project type: Vocational training
Project reach: 225 direct beneficiaries

Chittagong is one of the fastest growing cities in the world with 6,5 million inhabitants and the busiest port in the country. Poverty, unemployment and natural disasters mean that many families live in slums under poor conditions. Most children cannot go to school or drop out early, and the majority of young people lack the skills to access well-paid employment despite jobs being available.

Together with Terre des Hommes, the GSRD Foundation will train young people from Chittagong and guide them towards well-paid and secure jobs. To achieve this goal, a vocational training centre will be established to provide trainings based on market demands. The programs offered will focus on manufacturing and industrial production with specialisations in welding, fabrication, wiring, electronics, and industrial leather garments. All students will be trained in computing and English.

Trainings will last at least six to nine months long, in addition to an internship of three months. The vocations offered are based on local labour demand research conducted amongst 275 companies and organizations. After the first batch of graduates, local labour demand will be re-assessed.
