Empowering returned migrant women

Partner: The Asia Foundation
Country: China
Start date: 01/06/2018
Project type: Entrepreneurship
Project reach: 120 direct beneficiaries

GSRD Foundation and The Asia Foundation have been working together since 2013 to empower migrant women in China. In 2018, The GSRD Foundation and The Asia Foundation began a new project which builds on the success of earlier efforts to improve the livelihoods and socio-economic well-being of migrant women and adapts the proven program approach to meet the specific needs of returning migrant women in Chongqing. As the number of available factory jobs continues to decrease, a growing number of migrant workers are returning home and seeking to start their own businesses as a means of income. Despite having strong entrepreneurial ambitions, many of these migrant workers lack the necessary skills and information to succeed. Returned migrant women in particular have few opportunities to access much-needed business training, resources, and networks.

With the support of GSRD Foundation, The Asia Foundation will strengthen and improve the business skills and networks of returned migrant women entrepreneurs. The Asia Foundation and its local partners will support the successful launch and sustainable growth of these women’s micro or small businesses and cultivate new market opportunities for participants, giving them a great start to become economically independent.
