In response to the 2005 flood in Trichy, India, the Society for Education Village Action and Improvement (SEVAI) implemented an educational program for flood victims. Together with Pro Victimis, the GSRD Foundation supported SEVAI in this endeavour.

The Educational Program consisted of two components literacy training and vocational training – and is implemented through 750 Self Help Groups (SHG) that have been created in the affected flood areas.

The literacy component of the program is mainly focused on teaching practical life skills including writing, mathematics, banking operations, legal knowledge and empowerment. In the vocational training component, courses are focused on the fields of agriculture, business and commerce, engineering and technology, health and education for disabled, home science, or humanities science and education. Up to 900 SHG members received a three-month vocational training over a period of three years.
