Improving the Quality of Indian Education

Partner: Mahindra United World College
Country: India
Start date: 01/01/2010
Project type: Vocational Training
Project reach: 120 direct beneficiaries

Together with Mahindra United World College, the GSRD Foundation tried to break the cycle of poverty in India by providing educational and emotional support to village children via the Akshara (access to opportunity) Program.

Working alongside small educational facilities in Indian villages, Akshara enhanced the quality of education and life by supporting children and their families across a range of needs: educational, nutritional, medical and vocational. Akshara supports local schools by providing teacher training and structured programmes for English, Mathematics and Science.

Akshara supported young Indians until they become financially independent, especially girls who face unique challenges in a society where a heavy workload is placed on women and children and where the dowry system is still active. Once a participant has learnt a skill, Akshara uses its network of contacts to assist each participant in getting his or her first non-subsistence job.
